Taste Of South India

The Taste of South India is an odd name for a restaurant where the only thing South Indian are the dosas. It looks a bit forlorn from street-level and after climbing two flight of stairs one discovers it is equally forlorn inside. The brightest part of the restaurant is its colourful interiors with Tibetan lamps and wall-hangings, colourful prayer flags fluttering outside the huge glass windows, and its colourful plastic flowers and plants. The best seats are arranged by the window looking outwards to the market plaza below. The day I was there, I sat for a while by the window, enjoying the views of the snow-covered Stok Kangri in the distance, before the sun got too hot and I'd to change tables. The restaurant's menu is quite a mish-mash. Dosas, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, such as dal tadka and chicken curry, probably a confused attempt to attract as many diners as possible. I ordered a masala dosa. It took quite some time coming, though I was the only diner. The masala dosa was nice, the sambhar was over-salty, the chef who doubled up as a waiter probably had a bad day. Surprisingly, there was authentic coconut chutney, though a bit bland. The lunch was enjoyable, except for the zero ambience and the sullen chef. Any eatery on the second floor has a locational disadvantage, but friendly service, cozy interiors, a well-designed menu and better signage can certainly work wonders. You've to try harder to attract new customers and get repeat ones. And if you're named "Taste of South India", you should build your brand accordingly. There're just too many restaurants in the Main Market serving dal tadka and chicken curry, and they're better located too.

This is not South Indian food at all. I was really disappointed. We just couldn't finish what we ordered. They don't know how to cook dosa at all. Better they should learn it from Google or rename it. There are only dosa varieties available rest all are normal like Paratha, North Indian dishes. Please rename your restaurant name and remove the posters too. I have seen Kerala food posters around the restaurant but none of them are available. Not even idly is on the menu. It's ok if you can't make it but rename it.

Had dosa here today. Its bang on the market, opposite Sorisso. Wait time was ok for us. Two of us ordered paper dosa and masala dosa. Frankly, overall taste was average. Dosa were a bit too oily. Sambhar lacked the authentic touch. Chutney was tasteless. But after a week in Ladakh, having craving for South Indian, it worked well..prices are high. 110 for paper and 140 for masala..overall seating is for about 25-30 people but then waiting will go up.

I am from South India and while in Ladakh for long time missed the South Indian food. This is the right place to satisfy your craving. Enjoyed the south food

Not a great restaurant unlike its name. Taste is really not worth going. Food is not served hot and fresh. Not at all a go to place in Leh.

worst food i ever have in my all india ride.. and overpriced too..

It was a finger licking experience. Kerala porotta with chicken karuna is the best.
