Customer Reviews & Testimonials
We reached Kokni Canteen in Panjim around 4 PM for a late lunch, only to find the place still buzzing--always a good sign. Despite the off-hour, we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table, which says something about its popularity with both locals and tourists. Once seated, we went for the Kingfish (Surmai) Thali, a staple when in Goa, and added a plate of their Rava-Fried Chonak (Barramundi) on the side. The thali was quite nice, offering the familiar Goan flavours one expects--rice, curry, fried fish, a bit of pickle, and accompaniments. However, the shellfish was noticeably missing, and while the plate was balanced, I did feel it could've had a bit more variety to make it feel truly complete. The Chonak, though, was a highlight. Beautifully fried in a crisp rava coating, it was flavourful and came with a small salad. That said, it did feel a little overpriced for the portion size. To wrap up, we ordered their Bebinca for dessert. It was delicious but disappointingly small--barely a few bites, which didn't quite justify the cost or the craving. Worth a visit for the authentic Goan flavours and the lively vibe, but a few tweaks to the portions and pricing could really elevate the experience.
During my recent visit to Panaji, I had the pleasure of dining at Kokni kanteen, a restaurant renowned for its authentic Goan cuisine. Kokni kanteen was established in the year .1972 The ambience is cozy and reminding traditional Goan homes, featuring red laterite walls and vintage furnishings. It's a perfect spot for both family gatherings and solo meals. I opted for their signature fish thaali meals, which included a variety of dishes like coconut fish curry, prawns chammanthi, chilly fish curry and rawa fried fish fry. Each item was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The kokum rasam was the variety item which was tasted first time. It is very crowded and busy time so that the staff can't handle everyone promptly. It is a must visit spot for anyone looking to explore Goan thaali meals. It costs Rs.320/- per head
It's a seafood lover's dream place to eat. Seafood thali was superb with a sample of most seafood in the menu. The crab gravy, king fish rava fry were delicious. Butter garlic prawns was delectable with the buttery garlicky sauce and perfectly cooked prawns. Too good down to the last bite. Clams coconut fry was another hit. The clams were bit tiny though. And quantity was huge. Squid rava fry was the only average dish of the order with not much flavour in it. Service provided was a headache with no one to pay attention. And as most others mentioned the wait time was huge which makes it a frustrating experience. Ambience was Portuguese inspired. Prices are on the steeper side.
OVERHYPED PLACE.....! For the last many years I have been visiting Goa & tried food at many places but never had a taste like the Kokani canteen. Last week we went there. As a kokani, I didn't like food at all. To justify their hotel name as KOKANI they use a lot of Kokam & Trifal. We barely finished thali, Goan curry was tasteless & the rest of the curry was too sour. Prawns biryani was like Prawns Tawa Pulao. Giving 1 Star only for fish fry. Excluding fish fry & their atmosphere nothing was Great.
One of the best top notch authentic Goan restaurants. Interiors are very artistically designed and has a very nice ambiance and atmosphere. Every items are Very unique taste and delicious, staffs are polite and welcoming. This place has got amazing vibes with Konkani music playing in the background. Absolutely worth visiting this place- highly recommend for everyone visiting Goa.
Eventhough we reached the hotel around 12:45pm, we had to wait around 20 minutes to get a seat. The staff manages the crowd well by giving tokens. We spent the waiting time taking pictures of the hotel. We settled on a side corner and ordered Fish Thali, Butter garloc prawns, Cortim Chicken and a breezer. Best Goan food in Panaji. All food dishes were really good and tasty. The staff were really polite and their service were exceptional. The parking for the hotel is on the sides of the small road. Must visit hotel in Panjim to visit with family on your Goan trip. Highly recommendable.
One of the best authentic Goan restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is excellent . Thali is the most famous and selling item. 350/- for authentic Goan thali and 280/- for veg thali. These include three types of fish curries , rice, their authentic drink, a fish fry and other side items. Thali was so tasty and quantity was more than enough. However the veg thali wasn't great hence I would not recommend that. It is famous among celebrities as well hence a must try restaurants in Panaji. We also tried Goa's Best Ceradura which is worth the hype.
We tried the biryani and king fish thali from here -- both dishes were really good. The thali comes with two pieces of fish, and the biryani portion is quite large. If you're not a heavy eater, one biryani can easily be shared between two people. The only downside is the small dining area. If it's crowded, you might have to wait. We had to wait around 30 minutes to get a seat, but the food was worth it!
