About Our Restaurant

Seasoned with spices and garnished with love, Kumar Mess has, for 45 years, offered not food for the body, but food for the soul. From a humble beginning that dates back to 1975, we have successfully established our love for authentic Chettinadu cuisine, which we had let simmer over time, among the many that crave the taste and richness of the flavours of Madurai. We take pride in the fact that our venture has strong cultural roots when my father, Dharmalingam Pillai, first set up a small shop in 1975 to feed the massive crowds that would gather to witness Madurai's infamous Chithirai Thiruvizha.

Customer Reviews & Testimonials

Sathish Kumar Pandurangan

Worst Experience - Overpriced and not worthy Food We visited Madurai Kumar near Tambaram Railway Station for a light dinner. Planned for A2B in the same building, but it was crowded, so we came here. The menu was overpriced, but we thought the food would be worth it. We ordered 4 idlis (100) and 1 kal dosa (60). The total bill was 168. The idlis were very small, sambhar and chutneys were little, and the taste was average. The kal dosa was worse--like homemade dosa, but bad. We ate here because we had our 4-year-old daughter and didn't want to search for another place. It was a very bad experience. Avoid this restaurant.

Today, I ordered through Zomato, and I noticed they are charging a significant amount for each dish. But the dishes are not worth the money. Biryani without gravy or Salna. They are charging 60 per Parota , but size is very small. We are paying our hard earned money, Kumar Mess should understand that. Had an atrocious experience

The quality of food is good. The mutton and other items they served were fresh and tastes good. The servicing is good. For Ambience 2/5 due to noisy customers. Setting of place and cleanliness 4/5. Can be recommended only for casual dining.

The food is too expensive. I ordered egg kottu porotta. I got it in 2 mins. I believe it was already prepared and they just made it hot. Also the taste was not that good. 180 for Kottu porotta, 250 for egg biriyani was shocking for such standard hotel

Authentic Madurai taste in Tambaram Railway Station!! Tried Mutton Nenju Soup, Chicken Kothu Parotta, Idiyappam, Aatu Kaal Paaya, Muttai Dosai, Chettinad Chicken Roast. All were exceptional. Freshly prepared and served too quickly. Price is quite high considering the quantity. Only 5 pieces in Chicken Roast costs 180. They are not serving free salna for parotta. Side dish need to be ordered separately. Cost for two : 700

I went to this restaurant for dinner after I got off the train. Four idlis Rs 84. Single idli Rs 21. Other menu items are also high priced. Self service and not even chairs to sit on. When I asked them why no chair, they said you can go upstairs then sit and eat. But rates are high if you opt upstairs. The ground floor itself charges more without A.C, chairs and self service. Tambaram railway station is mainly used by middle class and lower middle class people. There is no affordable restaurant in the Tambaram station for the lower middle class. Everywhere I can see only Madras cofee, A2B, Chai wale and Madurai Kumar mess like that only. Poor railway management. I hope, Tambaram railway station will be given to Adani in the future.
