Customer Reviews & Testimonials

Mou Halder

After a long time I came to Kolkata with my daughter and was dying to eat authentic Bengali food. So we chose this restaurant after reading 4.5 star reviews. We were super excited to explore authentic Bengali cuisine. We had lunch starting with fish fry, mochar ghonto, pabda kali jeera jhol and white rice. Fish fry was good but nothing special. Mochar ghonto was like eating chili paste. The mocha's flavors are overpowered by spiciness. I felt the chef didn't have enough confidence to present the delicacy of Mocha. So the chef tried his best to cover his/her lack by making the dish incredibly spicy. Then we had the pabda jhol. Jhol was as light as I wanted. The fish size was nice. But we lost our entire appetite as soon as we dug into the fish. It was not cleaned, and bloody raw near the peti. I was so shocked that I forgot to take a picture of the raw side of the pabda pet. It's a serious issue that could lead to food poisoning. When I first drew attention to the server, he looked at the fish and denied. Then the entire team came and saw the bloody raw inside of the fish. They apologized and offered to make the dish right. But we already started feeling disgusted. They kept insisting to replace it with another fish. So I agreed for a simple one piece mach bhaja. It was okay. I appreciate their apologies but I'm not coming back again.

I had Luchi and Mutton Kala Bhuna.. Mutton was pre boiled, tasteless and chewy.. luchi had smell of oil... Overpriced... Absolutely bull shit Fish Fry was comparatively better, but at Rs275/- it's too overpriced... NOT WORTH IT

Worst experience ever, we have to wait almost 1.5 hours to get our ordered food for 10 people, waste of money, taste are just unpalatable & spicy, we went here only showing their ratings and reviews, but it was just paid reviews. Fish fry not good enough, Mutton, chicken - inferior taste, polao-third rate, vetki paturi-rotten etc etc just sweet & chatni was good. Overall suggestion, if you want to explore, just avoid this Heshel.

Tanur Hesel Location: Opposite Sarat Bose Road Post Office Nestled conveniently opposite the Sarat Bose Road Post Office, Tanur Hesel stands out as a gem for Bengali cuisine. From the moment you step inside, the interiors immediately immerse you in the rich tapestry of Bengali culture. Vintage gramophones and old telephones are strategically placed, evoking a nostalgic atmosphere that adds charm to the dining experience. The seating area is compact yet cozy, with an additional dining space at the back that accommodates more guests without feeling cramped. We visited on the eve of Bhai Dooj for lunch, and the hospitality was nothing short of exceptional. The owner, Santanu, along with his wife Priyanka, manage the restaurant with warmth and friendliness, making each guest feel at home. The staff were equally humble and attentive, enhancing the overall experience. We started our meal with refreshing welcome drinks: Gondhoraj Ghol and Pora Aaam Er Sorbat. Both drinks were deliciously revitalizing and set a positive tone for what was to come. Our food journey began with Mutton Jali Kebab, a Bangladeshi starter that was perfectly spiced, followed by a crispy Bhekti Fish Fry that showcased the freshness of the fish. The meal continued with steam rice accompanied by comforting dishes like Aloo Posto and Jhuri Aloo Bajha. The Ghee Suktani added a rich flavor that complemented the simpler dishes beautifully. The standout dishes included the Chitol Mach er Muthya, Kochu Pata Bhapa Chingri, and Sila Bata Kola Chingri. Each item was prepared using traditional methods, particularly the unique sila bata process for crushing spices, which is becoming increasingly rare. This technique elevates the flavors, making every bite truly authentic. We also indulged in the Padha Hilish Bhapa, a signature dish that lived up to its reputation, along with Basanti Pulao and the rich Kala Bhuna Mutton Kasha, another Bangladeshi specialty. The mixed chutney provided a delightful contrast to the savory dishes, while the fried ice cream offered a sweet finish to our meal. In my opinion, Tanur Hesel serves some of the freshest and most delicious Bengali food in South Kolkata. The quality of the ingredients and the authenticity of the preparation are commendable. For anyone looking to savor true Bengali flavors, I highly recommend the Kala Bhuna Mutton, Mutton Jali Kebab, Chingri Kola Bata, Fish Fry, Padha Hilish, and Chitol Macher Muthya. Tanur Hesel is undoubtedly one of the best Bengali restaurants in the area, with reasonable prices that won't break the bank. To avoid any rush, prior booking is essential, and there's ample parking space available beside the restaurant. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this eatery promises an unforgettable culinary journey into the heart of Bengali cuisine.

Excellent Bengali food. Every single item was delicious and prepared with care. We took the Thali and a few a-la-carte items. Highly recommend Mochar chop as starters. All of the items were equally delicious - will surely visit again.

Had a wonderful experience.. The place maintains great balance between the ambiance and food quality. The ambiance is very soothing and calm with an authentic bengali touch. The food is top notch. We tried many dishes and all of them were really good. However, the ones that we liked the most were kalabhuna mutton and dhokar dalna.. The behaviour of the staff was really nice too.. Loved it..
